A Letter to My 40-Year-Old Self

May 29, 2020

Dear My 40-Year-Old-Self,

How are you doing? I wonder where you are right now. Maybe you are still living in Brussels, or moving to Ghent, or maybe enjoying the sunshine while sipping a cocktail somewhere at a pristine coastline. Wherever you are, I know you are doing fine, and it will remain the same as always.

Today marks 28 years since I was born. It feels so fast, eh? I don’t even expect time to rotate this quick as if I’m leaping into the future. There are so many things happening in these last 2 years. Moving back from Bali to Jakarta, having a bad relationship, becoming a workaholic (again), got two scholarships (which I never expect), finally moving to Europe - Austria and Belgium. It seems so hectic, doesn’t it? Yet, I enjoy this never-ending pilgrim with full of lemons.

Uncertainty becomes the gimmick at this point. From virus to personal matters, nobody knows where the ship will sail later. The weather can wreck it up during the journey and strand you on a random island. But don’t you ever forget these three mantras: you survived, you survive, you’ll survive. Why worry if everything has been written up there? I know you’ve been through a lot of shits, but nothing can really break you.

If only I can meet you in person, I just want to let you know you’re not alone. Even if you feel lonely, that’s fine and it’s totally normal. Maybe all you need to do is look closely to your surrounding. Now you know you’re not alone, right? If that’s not enough for you, sit by the window during the sunset hour and remember how beautiful your life is.

I still have so much to say to you but let me keep it for next year. Happy birthday, my 40-year-old self. I hope you find your happiness wherever, and whoever you are with :)

Sincerely,

My 28-Year-Old Self
